Freaky Website of the Week: www.TheHumanMarvels.com

By Lauren Britton

Way back in the day, people went to circuses and the like to see “freaks of nature.” Well, I’m bringing those to you via the web. I happened upon www.thehumanmarvels.com by chance on a recent stormy afternoon and it definitely made me look around the room every once in a while to make sure no one was sneaking up on me.

When first entering the site the user has to scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen where a list of names awaits them. When you click on one of the names at the bottom of the screen, a picture and profile of a different “freak” is displayed. For example, when you click on Fedor Jefticheive (Jo-Jo The Dog-Faced Boy), his picture will appear, followed by several paragraphs supplying information on his life and condition.

It must be said that most of the people on this website were indeed actual people, and many of their situations have more recently been identified and are more sensitively dealt with in this day and age. People have a better understanding of what was actually going on (and in some cases is still going on) with certain individuals, and their conditions have been given a medical diagnosis and name.

In my opinion, the two most interesting subjects on this site are Count Orloff (the Transparent Man) and Pasqual Pinon (The Two Headed Mexican). These two offer up a bit more than your typical Siamese twins or overly hairy woman. Definitely take a look at their stories.

If you find yourself sitting around, wanting to kill some time and MySpace just doesn’t sound appealing, take a look at www.thehumanmarvels.com. You won’t be disappointed. The top of the homepage also lists some other peculiar sites that feature strange things as well. If you have some time, you should give those a look too.
